Fields of activity and interest

The First Surgical Clinic- Mures County Clinical Hospital is a university clinic, where medical assistance, didactic and research activities are developed. The clinic, through its highly qualified medical personnel, provides medical assistance for each patient with surgical pathology, both in emergency situations and through prior scheduling. The main fields of activity are:

  • General surgery
  • Oncologic surgery - represents a field of high interest, where complex surgical interventions are performed (duodenopancreatectomies, total gastrectomies, subtotal colectomies, oesophagoplasties, neck dissections, etc). The greatest majority of cases are represented by the colo-rectal cancer, where we have a complex experience. Regarding the breast cancer, we are among the few clinics in the country which introduced the technique of sentinel node detection on large scale, relying on a very exceptional collaboration with the Department of Pathology and The Clinic of Oncology
  • Laparoscopic surgery -being the first clinic from Targu-Mures (The Second Surgical Clinic) which acquired laparoscopic surgical equipment, the medical personnel has an outstanding experience in this field, different types of laparoscopic surgical interventions being performed within our clinic.
  • Endocrine surgery -mainly focused on the pathology of the thyroid gland; neck dissection is performed for neoplastic pathologies and for pathologies of different etiology
  • Bariatric surgery - represents a new area of interest for the medical personnel, who attended different courses in our country and abroad. There are performed different types of surgical interventions (gastric banding, by-passes, gastric sleeve, etc) with very good outcomes (film gastric sleeve) (pictures)
  • Peripheral vascular surgery - we have a vast experience in the surgery of varices of the lower limbs; and deobstructions and arterial by-passes also represent a more recent interest
  • Aesthetic surgery - although the main aim of the surgical treatment is to save lives and to cure the patients; we never neglected the aesthetic aspect. The abdominoplasties represent surgical interventions which we currently perform with very good outcomes.

The array of the affections treated within our clinic is very large, being mainly represented by abdominal affections; but, many surgical interventions from different domains are performed as follows:

Affected organ Pathology Types of surgery
Thyroid and parathyroid Goiter, chronic thyroiditis, thyroid and parathyroid tumours, thyreoglosal duct Thyroidectomy, parathyroidectomy, neck dissection
Breast Tumours, cysts, nipple discharges, gynecomastia, malformations Breast needle biopsy, lumpectomy, sectorectomy, mastectomy, radical mastectomy with axillary lymph node dissection, sentinel node detection, frozen sections
Oesophagus Oesophageal tumours, benign stenosis, gastro-oesophageal reflux, oesophageal diverticuli, oesophageal varices Oesophageal resections, oesophagoplasties with gastric and colonic segments, antireflux interventions through classic and laparoscopic approach, azygo-portal disconnection
Stomach, duodenum Tumours, ulcers Gastric resections, total gastrectomies
Small intestine, colon Tumours, polyps, diverticuli Intestinal resections, colectomies
Rectum and anus Tumours, haemorrhoids, anal fissures, abscesses, perianal fistulae Rectal resections and rectal amputations, haemorrhoidectomies, sphincterotomies, fistulectomies
Liver and biliary tract Tumours, hydatid cysts, biliary lithiasis, etc Classic and laparoscopic cholecystectomies, hepatic resections, biliary derivations
Pancreas Acute and chronic pancreatitis, tumours, cysts Pancreatectomies, internal derivations
Uterus and its adnexa Uterine fibroma, ovarian cysts Hysterectomies, annexectomies, laparoscopic cystectomies

Skin and its adnexa Cutaneous and soft tissue tumours Tumour excision

Special surgical procedures:

There is a permanent interest for further professional improvement in our surgical team and for introducing the newest surgical techniques for the patient's treatment; inclining towards minimal invasive techniques, which provide less surgical trauma and a faster outcome. The special surgical techniques practiced within our clinic are:

Regarding the digestive tract pathology

  • gastric sleeve- for the treatment of morbid obesity
  • Laparoscopic colectomies for colon cancers
  • Laparoscopic rectal amputation for low situated rectal cancers
  • Laparoscopic apendicectomy
  • Laparoscopic hiatal hernia repair and laparoscopic approach for cardial achalasia
  • Transcystic drainage for common biliary duct obstructions
  • The use of mechanic sutures with linear and circular staplers in low colorectal anastomoses, in order to avoid  definitive iliac anus
  • Laparoscopic approach of the hydatid cyst
  • Laparoscopic splenectomies
  • Laparoscopic hysterectomies and adnexectomies
  • Ultrasound guided percutaneous drainage of the hydatid cysts and hepatic abscesses

Regarding the breast pathology

  • sentinel node detection
  • breast reconstructions and plasties
  • ultrasound guided true-cut needle breast biopsies
  • breast lump excision guided by harpoon marking technique

Other procedures

  • the use of tension free hernia repair technique and the use of synthetic mesh in hernia repair
  • neck dissection technique for cervical neoplasia
  • arterial by-passes in peripheral arteriopathies and arteriovenous fistula for hemodyalisis
